The Mt. Hood Adventure Park at Skibowl: Oregon’s Most Exciting Summer Attraction

The Mt. Hood Adventure Park at Skibowl prevails as Oregon’s most exciting summer attraction, providing unique recreational opportunities for everyone–from families and teens to actionseekers and naturalists—where you are in control the of each adventure.

The Adventure Park at Skibowl covers nearly 1,000 acres of flower-strewn alpine meadows and forests, serving as a unique gateway to one-million-acre Mt. Hood National Forest. Easily accessible, The Adventure Park lies in the resort town of Government Camp, OR, off Highway 26, about 50 miles east of Portland.

(In winter, Skibowl is known as America’s Largest Night Ski area. It was among the first ski areas to offer summer activities, operating now for over three decades.)

Mt. Hood Adventure Park: Skibowl West & Skibowl East

We have a variety of food options at both bases including a food truck on the westside base. Although most people drive between both sides of the park, you can also take a 1.2-mile stroll through the forest along the Summit Trail which links Skibowl West and East.

Skibowl West: the Scenic Sky Chair, Alpine Slide Disc Golf & Distinctive Hiking Trails

Visible from Highway 26 right before you enter Government Camp, you will notice the iconic Alpine Slide. The unique attraction remains one of the most popular reasons to visit the Adventure Park. The Alpine Slide is the only ½ mile dual track slide in the Northwest.  The action begins with a leisurely trip up the hillside on the Scenic Sky Chair. From there, you’ll take in magnificent Cascade sites and an unmatched, majestic view of Mt. Hood nearby. After getting off the chairlift, you’re just steps away from the start of the Alpine Slide. Within moments, you’ll be cruising down the winding track in your own sled-like cart. The dual track threads its way through a stunning mountain meadow course featuring banked turns and S curves. You control the speed with a simple hand break. Most people ride solo, but parents can double up with younger kids that are between 36” and 48” tall.

Despite its allure, some park guests choose to bypass the Alpine slide altogether, opting to ride the Scenic chairlift round‐trip. Some play the 18-hole disc golf course back to the base area. Others hike back down, while more serious trekkers continue up, accessing the miles of Mt. Hood Forest trails from the Upper bowl. Whichever way you go, well-marked trails and interpretive signage guide the way.

Skibowl has created expanded signage along two popular routes: the Tom Dick Trailhead on the West side and the Multorpor Fen Trailhead on the East Side. Besides showcasing the natural plant and animal life, the signage also explains how indigenous people used organic resources for medicines, food, clothing, and tools. Members of the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs annually trekked to the area in the summer months to harvest and hunt. In fact, many of the modern roads and highways in Government Camp were originally traveled by Native Americans often following natural routes created by animals in the wilderness.

Skibowl East: For Thrill Seekers & Family Fun

The attractions on the east side of the Mt. Hood Adventure Park are geared toward those looking for more excitement and for people seeking family fun. This one-of-a-kind destination offers thrill seekers a chance to experience a wide range of exhilarating activities.

At Skibowl East, you will find the Aerial Park, a hillside area featuring a free‐fall 100-foottall bungee tower, The Tree Top Bridge Tour ropes course and 800’ feet of Zip lines. Other Eastside attractions include the Summer Tube Hill, a 32-foot rock climbing wall, and bungee trampolines. Families will find many kid-friendly activities there too like mini golf, pedal cars, batting cages, and the Amaze’n Maze.

Skibowl East is also home to the Malibu Raceway, dedicated to mini car racing and competition. The racetrack features two types of cars: the high-performance Indy Race Karts (requiring a driver’s license) and nimble Sprint Karts for drivers 12 and up to 58” or taller. Either way, course speeds are timed from the green light to the checkered flag, so the race is on with every lap. Youngsters not quite ready for the faster karts can enjoy driving fun, too. The Kiddy Kart track provides children the experience of driving in a kids-only atmosphere. Designed with maximum safety, these limited-speed cars have secure harnesses and travel around a track surrounded by safety barriers. Kiddy Karts are great for ages 3 and up, with a weight limit of under 90 lbs.
